Looking for a new book to read?

http://velopress.com/books/reading-the-race/

In Reading the Race, race announcer Jamie Smith and veteran road captain Chris Horner team up to deliver a master class in bike racing strategies and tactics. Armed with strategies and tactics learned over thousands of bike races, cyclists and cycling fans will learn how to read a race—and see how to win it.

Bike racing is called a rolling chess game for a reason. Sure, a high pain threshold and a killer VO2max are helpful. But if you’re in it to win it, you need race smarts. Starting breaks, forming alliances, managing a lapped field, setting up a sprint—on every page, Horner and Smith reveal new secrets to faster racing and better results.

Smith and Horner dissect common mistakes, guiding riders with lessons learned from decades of racing experience. Reading the Race reveals the veteran’s eye view on:

  • Assembling the best possible team
  • Crafting strategies around the team, course, and rivals
  • Reacting instantly to common scenarios
  • Making deals and combines
  • Breaks, echelons, blocking
  • Pack protocol and etiquette
  • Finishing in the prize money or on the podium
  • Winning the group ride

Whether you’re a new racer, an aspiring pro, a team manager, or even a roadside fan, Reading the Race will elevate your cycling IQ for better racing.

GORDIE HOWE AND AL KALINE TALK SPORTS AND THE LANSING CX FEST

https://www.usacycling.org/register/2013-3162

Sunday morning Lansing CX Fest (LCXF) sat down with Red Wing great Gordie Howe and Tiger Hall of Famer, Al Kaline and talked a little sports.

LCXF: “Gordie, the Tigers lost a tough one Saturday night.”

Gordie*: “The pitchers are throwing their guts out. If the bats don’t show up, the off season will start this week.”

LCXF: “Al, the Red Wings season started this past week. Any thoughts on that?”

Al*: “They got good coachin’, good blue liners and backstop. They will be playing in June.”

LCXF: “Al, the LCXF is October 12th in Lansing. Have you been out the course?”

Al: “I rode the course this past Wednesday. There’s something for everyone, run ups, a small bit of sand, some technical stuff, a gnarly hill. Enjoyed it.”

LCXF: “Gordie, any thoughts on the central location of the race?”

Gordie: “For cryin’ out loud, it’s Lansing. Forty-five minutes from East Grand Rapids, 50 minutes from the southeast burbs. Heck, when I was playin’ we drove all night on a bus to play the next game, these crossers got it made with a short drive to race.”

LCXF: “Al, any advice for someone who has not participated in a cyclocross event before?”

Al: “Yes. Ya don’t need some fancy bike, I was out there on my 1986 Huffy Sport. Just get out there and feel alive, unless you wanted to wait for the next color run in your hometown.”

LCXF: “One more question for you Gordie: Can you tell us where and when again?”

Gordie: “It’s the Lansing CX Fest, October 12, Lansing, Michigan. Go to the USA Cycling site for the details. For you techy types that aren’t going to use your Rand Mcnally to get there, plug in 3300 W. Michigan, Lansing in your GPS thing.”
