3 Road Events Remain

These are the last three road events on the 2014 calendar:
- Gaslight in East Grand Rapids
- Birmingham Bike Festival
- 50th Debaets-DeVos Memorial Pro-Am Bike Race

Now, certainly, 'cross racers everywhere are celebrating this fact as it means that the beginning of 'cross season is just around the off-camber corner. But a lot of work has gone into these events, and your participation will be appreciated.
1. Gaslight
It's a last one on the west side. Great course. Beach nearby.

2. BBF
This is the State Championships for the Elite categories. Another great course in a cool town.

3. The Cadieux Race
This is their 50th anniversary. Most races don't make it to their 5th.

Come January, when the cold winter winds are howling and you're staring at the trainer,  you'll look back on your 2014 season and wonder: did I ride every race I could possibly ride?
Well, here come your last opportunities. Make the most of it.

Kick off the 'cross season with the Alma Grand Prix

On Saturday, September 6 the Michigan 'cross season kicks off with the Alma Grand Prix of Cyclocross p/b Eclipse Cycling, which is the first race of the Tailwind series of USAC races. The venue is the site of a former airport (closed in the early 1960’s) which was converted into a yard waste dump site until the late 1990’s. Since then, absolutely nothing (productive…) has happened on the 70 +/- acres of city-owned land. The Alma GP course has been carved out of some pretty awesome surface features left behind by both of the previous tenants, with a few man-made obstacles set in for good measure.

Registration is now open through USA Cycling and closes on Sunday, August 31, at 11:59 p.m. EST:

Early number pick up on Friday night is at the Alma Brewing Company in downtown Alma. Spy photos of the course (and a history of the venue) are available on the Facebook page.

Racing Tip: Ride in the Drops

The more time you spend riding the indoor trainer, the more likely you are to develop the habit of riding on the hoods. It's much more comfortable. You can see the TV better.

But there are several reasons why you need to ride in the drops while riding in a pack. Riding in the drops will improve your aerodynamics and allow you to get more benefit from drafting. But the bigger reason to ride low is to lower your center of gravity. This will make you MUCH more stable and give you much better control of your bike. You will negotiate corners better. Riding in the drops will also put your fingers closer to the brake levers, and give you better leverage when braking and allow you to push the bike forward when braking hard. Riding here will also prevent you from getting your bars hooked with the rider next to you.

Riding on the hoods is certainly more comfortable. You can breathe better. You can see the road better. It doesn't hurt your neck and back. But it's not giving you optimum control.

And if the riders around you want you to have anything, it's optimum control of your bike.
