Michigan Cyclocross State Championship - December 5th, 2015

Just 10 days to go until the Michigan Cyclocross State Championship race, presented by Advantage Benefits Group.  The winner in each category will receive the State Champion CX Jersey as well as USAC medals for the top three.  If that's not enough to draw you West, this race will also count as double points in the MiCX State Cyclocross Series. Other highlights include the Rockford Brewing Beer Tent - with 4 beer choices on tap - and the Alger Bikes Flyover.  The event is less than 1/2 a mile from the Merrill Trail and within 3 miles of Luton Park.
Online registration closes next Wednesday, December 2, at 6:00 PM! There will be a $5 late fee for registration day-of.  To find out more, please see the race flier or visit www.michigancx.com

A salute to the volunteers at Fall Fury CX

Hats off to Nate Phelps, Kim Thomas, and the volunteers working with Central District Cyclery for the remediation work they've done at Wilcox Park after Fall Fury CX.  After some torrential rains on Saturday there was a bit of turf damage, but they were able to rake and re-seed the park even before the WOODTV article was published. You might be able to see the path of the CX course until the snow falls, but we know from previous races that turf usually heals in the early spring.

It's hard to promote cycling races and news reports like the one on WOODTV 8 make it a little bit harder.  Some of you might have heard some rumors that Detroit Day 2 at Belle Isle was canceled.  It's not, but that race was forced to move to Addison Oaks due to concerns about turf damage.  Cyclists need to be good stewards to maintain access to these parks and we should all give a round of applause to the Grand Rapids crew that came out on Monday to repair the damage done.  A lot of the work involved in MBRA and USA Cycling events is pretty thankless so let me just say this - thank you all for inviting us to Grand Rapids last weekend and doing this and the other things to give us great venues and events in Michigan.  -HE

CX'er's looking to renew their annual licenses - listen up!

Are you a CX racer that still needs to renew his/her annual license for 2015?  Well, we know it sucks to pay $70 now for a license that expires in January.  To help incentivize CX racers to renew their annual licenses USA Cycling has introduced a special 16 month membership for those that have not yet renewed their annual license. You get the rest of this year and all of next year for $115 - that's two CX seasons!  See details below!

USA Cycling is excited to announce a special offer for new and returning members just in time for cyclo-cross season. Beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 1, new and returning members can purchase their 2015 license and also all of 2016 for the discounted price of $115.

  • Annual racer licenses are currently $70 each. For members that want to race cyclo-cross for the next two seasons, this special deal offers a $140 value for $115 - that's a $25 discount.
  • This pricing is available to anyone without a current USA Cycling membership: first-timers, renewing members, and for former members who want to come back to racing after a break.
  • Because USA Cycling switched to a single domestic racer license for all disciplines in 2014, the special $115 license will not only cover racers for the next two cross seasons, but will also allow them to race or try any road, track, and mountain bike events they have planned for 2016.
  • Racers can receive a further discount by applying a one-day license credit, if they have one, toward the purchase of the annual license, lowering the price to $105 if using a mountain bike one-day, or $100 if using a road/track/cx one-day.

To take advantage of this special offer, just click here and select the Limited Time Offer under Racer Licenses.

This offer is only available for adult domestic racer licenses and is not valid for international, junior, or collegiate licenses. For cyclo-cross racers who only want to purchase a racer license for the remainder of 2015, the regular $70 annual license will still be available.

Call For Proposals: State Championship CX Race

The CX season is fast approaching and we'd like to announce the final details for the calendar and points series within the next two weeks.  Before we can, we need to select the state championship cyclocross race.  If you would like your race to be considered for state championship designation and you haven't already contacted MBRA - do so now by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

State championship events need to have the following fields/categories for registration:

  • Men: Cat 1/2, Cat 3, Cat 4, Cat 5, Masters 35+, Masters 45+, Masters 55+
  • Women: Cat 1/2, Cat 3, Cat 4
  • Junior Women: Ages 9-12, 13-14, 15-16, 17-18
  • Junior Men: Ages 9-12, 13-14, 15-16, 17-18

Note that additional fields/categories may be added at the discretion of the race promoter. Women, Juniors, and Masters races may be started together and/or run concurrently, but must be scored separately for awards. The MBRA will provide state champion jerseys to the winner of the above categories.  The MBRA will further provide medals to the top three in categories 3, 4, and 5 for the age groups: 19-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64 and 65+.  In prior years some age groups have been run as separate fields - this is no longer a requirement for a state championship event and is left to the discretion of the race promoter.  Once selected, a race will hold the state championship designation for one year with the option to renew for 2016.

If you are a race promoter and would like to apply, please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and notify him of your intent by 11:59PM on August 31st.  After submitting your notice of intent - a full proposal featuring a draft of your race flier, course map, and tech guide is expected by 11:59PM on September 7th.  The selection and official announcement will be made on or before September 10th.

Please help two Michiganders who are headed to the Junior Cycling World Championships!

Two prominent Junior cyclists from Michigan (who also happen to be brother and sister) have been selected for the U.S. National team for the Junior Cycling World Championships in Kazakhstan during August. Danielle and Luke Mullis started their bike racing career at the local velodrome in Bloomer Park in 2009. Since this time they have won national titles and raced internationally. Danielle was the top performing US athlete at the Junior Worlds in South Korea last year, she returns as a strong medal contender in various disciplines. Luke will race in the team pursuit with other young men from Illinois and Georgia making up the team as well as the 3k individual time trial. They were selected for the national team by winning qualifying events during June in California. Both athletes ride for a Michigan based Junior Development team, Andrie Machine Star and have a fund raising campaign supported by USAC active via the following links:
